Though the new replacement grave marker of Stephen, shows a birth day of the 10th, it is believed and recorded by many, that he was born on the 16th of Aug 1805. The Replacement family project was led by the late Robert "Bob" Campbell, and completed in 2002, by contributing descendants.

Husband of Chloe Adams [Norris] Letcher, they married Jan 9, 1829, in Perry County Alabama. Stephen was the son of Giles & Agnes [Talbert] Letcher, grandson of James & Malinda "Milly" [Key] Letcher.

Chloe moved to Bowie County Texas after Stephen's death, with some of her children, in a family migration, sometime after 1880. She is buried at the Center Ridge Cemetery in Maud Bowie County Texas.

Stephen & Chloe Letcher had 13 Known children:

Stephen's mother, Agnes, moved the family to Alabama after the War of 1812, and the mysterious death of her husband, Giles, who may have died in that service, family lore has it, that he was killed by indians in AL, while surveying land, he obtained from his military service. Giles served in Austin's Regiment South Carolina Militia, as a PVT, under command by his Uncle, Capt John Key's Company. Agnes moved the family before 1820 to AL, with her children, by that time, most of the Creek Indians had been removed from the State. They were living in Edgefield County South Carolina, prior to 1820, in fact, Giles father, Stephen's grandfather, James Letcher, served in the Revolutionary War, from that county in SC, he lost his life in service to is country in 1783.

Three sons served in the Civil War; John Jackson, Thomas Giles, and Stephen Baker Letcher, they survived the war, but with injuries. Originally, they were all in same unit, Co A, 20th AL Infantry Regiment. Their brother-in-law, Luvenia's hushand, James P Shaver, also served in the same unit.

Some of the Letcher's moved from AL to Bowie County Texas sometime after 1880 and before 1900, when they appear on the census of Bowie County.

Genetic DNA Testing of two Letcher males, one belonging to Stephen's line, and another on his brothers lineage, John David Letcher, was a perfect match. To this point, we only had circumstantial evidence, of our Stephen's relationship, to Giles Letcher, and thus James. Both Stephen and John were born in SC, in Alabama they both lived in close proximity to there Mother Agnes, wife of Giles. These test were in 2006, we realize the science has advanced, but one of the participants is now deceased, would be nice to some days re-test a pair of Letcher males to take the whole gamet of modern dna test, to further confirm this connection.
