His great grand father, James Garrard, was the second governor of Kentucky. His grandfather, Col. Daniel Garrard, was one of the wealthiest and most enterprising citizens of Clay County, KY. William was brother of Theophilus T., Franklin P., Joseph B. Reid, Lucinda T. Reid Stivers, Daniel Garrard Reid, James Washington Reid Jr., and Stephen Bates Reid.
