He was born Feb. 4, 1928, in Henderson County to the late Raphael McKinley Blackwell and Nellie Neas Blackwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jessie Sherman; two brothers, Ray Blackwell and Arvil Blackwell; and a grandson, Charles Barker.
He served in the Army and the Air Force for more than 14 years and he retired from Davis Oil Co., where he worked for eight years. He was a member of Clearview Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Massey Blackwell; two daughters, Betty Ann Blackwell and Connie Blackwell of Hendersonville; two sons, Luther Blackwell Jr. of Hendersonville and Steven Blackwell of Pickens, S.C.; three stepdaughters, Patricia Ann Smith of Fort Pierce, Fla., Brenda Bond of Basset, Va., and Melissa Gentile of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; five brothers, Curtis Blackwell of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Seagle Blackwell, L.B. Blackwell, Johnny Blackwell and the Rev. Dan Blackwell of Hendersonville; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Community Funeral Service Chapel in Martinsville, Va. The Rev. Charles R. Tomlinson officiated. The family received friends half an hour prior to the service.
