This is going to be a really long post, but if you read it all I promise that you may laugh and may even shed a tear, but it's from my heart about a very special man. A really good man went to Heaven yesterday, The Rev James Dan Blackwell. He was the preacher at Dana Baptist Church. I loved this man and his late wife Ruth Marie, she passed in Nov 2022. He could make me laugh and make me cry. Today I laugh at the memories I have with him and cry because less than 24 hours before he passed I shared my last memory. He passed from an apparent heart attack. I always called him James Dan even though he just went by Dan. He told me one time that I was the only person that called him James Dan. I said, "Well that's your name ain't it?". He said, "Well Yeah". I said, "Well Then". He said, " You can keep calling me that then". I also called his wife Marie by her full name, Ruth Marie. He just returned not too long ago from a trip he had taken to California and Oregon. He really liked that trip. Every time I saw him afterwards he would ask, "Did I tell you about the trip I took out west?". I am sure glad he got to take that trip. He was so loved by his community and his church, during his time as a preacher he preacher over 2000 funerals, and I think almost as many weddings. He kept track of them all. He loved his Ruth Marie too. Right after she passed he told me this story. He was by her side and he asked her if she remembered their first kiss, he said she wanted him to lean down, he thought she was going to tell him something, but when he got closer she put her hand behind his neck and pulled him in and kissed him and then she passed. He told he that their first kiss was in the back of her sisters car, while two of Rut Marie's sisters were in the front. I said, "James Dan, you didnt make out in the back of a car while her sisters were up front?" He grinned at me and said, "Yes I did" Then he said that first kiss took his breath away and now he took her last breath away. Tears came to my eyes hearing that. We then talked about Ruth Marie being in Heaven putting in a good word to God about him. I told him maybe she was up there telling God all he was up to down here. He said, " I hope she's not up there doing that, I need all the help I can get." I dont think he needs to worry about that, but if I could talk to him now I would tell him, it took Ruth Marie this long to talk God into letting him in, hee hee. After Ruth Marie's death I would see him a lot with these girls. I told him one time, "James Dan I sure see you with a lot of young girls", he said, "they're my grand daughters". I said, "you sure have a lot of grand daughters then" . He said, "yeah and they're all purdy too" He could sure talk them into cleaning his house for him too. I would see him out buying cleaning supplies and would ask him if he had talked them into cleaning for him again, he would reply, "But I am taking them to Golden Choral when they get done" He loved him some Golden Choral. He tried getting me to leave work one day and go with him. He just wanted me to tell my boss I was going to lunch and go with him. Even during covid his family tried to get him to stay away from there, but I am sure he sneaked off a few times and went. When I would see one of his relatives I would ask where James Dan was and several time they would say, "he is probably at Golden Choral". I got to know some of his kin, including some of his grand daughters and sons. One of his grand daughters lives in England and I met her right after Ruth Marie passed. She is back visiting him now, and I saw them Thursday afternoon, yep while someone was at his house cleaning it for him. She did a little shopping for him while he got to visit with me. I will always remember that and less than 24 hours later when his grand daughter and son came to see me and told me he had passed that morning. They said that they thought that I would like to know, so they came by to tell me. I appreciate that so much and not having to find out by reading an obituary to find out. Please keep James Dan's family, church congregation, and friends in your prayers. It's going to be hard for Dana Baptist Church to replace him. Glad Ruth Marie talked God into letting you in James Dan. I love you both.
