LUCEY JOHN ROGER S.J. Former pastor of Santa Maria church in Orinda died with family at the home of his friend and care giver, Mary Jo Sanders, in Richmond on April 2002 after a long struggle with small cell lung cancer. Father Lucey served as Associate Pastor in parishes in Fremont, Union City, Lafayette and Pleasant Hill before becoming Pastor of Santa Maria Church in 1994 where served until he was diagnosed in July 2000. Father Lucey was born in Bagley, WI on May 23, 1927, the fifth child of Gregory C. and Ella J. McNamara Lucey. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1954 and was ordained in 1958. From 1952 to 1955 he taught at St. John's College, Belize and at Champion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien, WI from 1962 and 1966. He served as President of Creighton Preparatory School in Omaha, NE from 1977 to 1982. For thirteen years Father Lucey served the missions of the Society of Jesus as a fundraiser, receiving an honorary degree from Sogang University in Seoul, Korea in recognition of his service. Father Lucey is survived by two brothers, Father Gregory F. of Mobile, AL and Patrick J. (Jean) of Milwaukee, WI and three sisters, Kathleen (Bill) Keegan of Green Bay, WI, Verona (Robert) Dyer of Sun City West, AZ and Eleanor (Bernard) Watson of Hot Springs Village, AR and 16 nieces and nephews and 28 grand nieces and nephews. Relatives living in the Bay area include a nephew, Leo Keegan of Fremont and a cousin, Mary (Tony) Adami, He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Sister Mary Eleanor Lucey, O.P. and one niece, Ellen (Lynn) Keegan Boes. Visitation at Santa Maria Church, Orinda from 1:00 until 7:00 on Wednesday afternoon with brief prayer services at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 and a Vigil Service at 4:00. The Mass of Resurrection will be at 7:30 and the interment Thursday at 10:00 A.M. at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, contributions maybe made to Father Lucey Memorial Fund at Santa Maria Church, 20 Santa Maria Way, Orinda or the Father Lucey Scholarship Fund at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, 1735 Le Roy Ave. Berkeley, CA 94709.
