Melvin (Mel) Earl Ray, 59, of DeMott Lane, Somerset, died yesterday at St. Peter's General Hospital, New Brunswick, following a long illness. Born in Frederick, Md., he lived here for 20 years.

Mr. Ray was the owner of Smitty's Appliance Service of Somerset, formerly located in New Brunswick. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 473. He was also the president of the Franklin Eagles Athletic Club.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Etta Jane Kerr Ray; two sons, Kenneth John of Somerset and Melvin Allan of Morristown: three sisters, Mrs. Marie Keeney of Woodsboro, Md., Mrs. Charlotte Bernard of Frederick, and Mrs. Naomi Minghini of Baltimore, Md.; a brother. George, also of Frederick, and a grandson.

Private services will be held tomorrow at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N. Main St., Milltown, with the Rev. Paul C. Walker, pastor of Community Presbyterian Church, South Brunswick, officiating. Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick.
