Vanish "Van"Grant ,54, was the third child born to the late Deacon Ezekiel "EG" Grant Sr. (d. 1972) and Mother Ardonia "DJ" Jones Grant (d. 1959). He was born on November 24, 1908, in Zolfo Springs, Hardee County, Florida.

He met and married Ethel (Ester) Grant, but they did not have any children.

Van enlisted in the United States Army on September 17, 1943, and served until he was honorably discharged on November 27, 1946, holding the rank of Private First Class.

Later, Van met Ladion Paxton Hammons, and they were blessed with three children: Gary Hammons, Yvonne Grant Howlett, and Leon Grant.
