William was the middle of three children of Morris Hampton and Amy Hampton Cliffton Hampton. Her mother's middle and married names were the same.

The dates used above are from the Gregorian calendar. Quaker religious records from the period -- which retained the Julian calendar and began the year in March -- recorded William's birth on the 23rd day of the 8th month, 1845 and his death on the 4th day of the 2nd month, 1876.

William was a farm laborer. He lived in the Cherryville section of Franklin Twp., Hunterdon Co. all of his life.
