A soft spoken, humble man, Mr. Ervin lived out his deep and abiding faith. Many would say he consistently role modeled the fruits of the spirit described in Galatians 5: 22-23. He was affectionately called "Mr. Sam" by generations of children in his 3–4-year-old Sunday School Class having taught for over 50 years at the Darlington Presbyterian Church. In addition, he served as an Elder and participated in numerous mission trips over the years.
He enjoyed gardening and sports. He was an avid gardener for decades sharing crops and flowers with friends and family. Another love was sports. Actively playing tennis, softball and football in his younger years and following all sports in his later years. He was well known to be a die-hard Clemson fan. While he was gentle and humble, when it came to sports and games, he was also competitive, even in recent years at the Presbyterian Home playing bingo and cards.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, Mr. Ervin was beloved and will be missed tremendously. He is survived by his sons Samuel Fulton Ervin III (Joan), James Martin Ervin (Louis), and Robert Witherspoon Ervin; three grandchildren, Samuel Fulton Ervin IV (Micca), Gavin Witherspoon Ervin (Brianna) and James Stuart Alexander Ervin; eight great grandchildren, David Gabriel Ervin, Marcus Wilson Ervin, Isaac Alexander Ervin, Ezekiel James Ervin, Drake Witherspoon Ervin, Ava Marie Ervin, Laura Laine Ervin, and Daniel Fulton Ervin. In addition, he is survived by sisters-in-law Susann Finklea Ervin, Ellen Gunkel Ervin, and Mary Katherine Vass, along with many nieces and nephews and their children.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Lura Martin Ervin, great grandchildren; Samuel Fulton Ervin V, Mariah Lynn Ervin, and William Gregory Ervin, siblings; Bunkie, Martha, Janet, his twin brother Jake, Willie, and Rion; brothers/sisters-in-law Bill Clarkson, Frank Vass, Elizabeth Ervin, Laura Jones, and Ann McQueen Dempsey.
