She was born in Stanley, Iowa, on August 9, 1944, one of 11 children of Clement and Margaret (Oakes) Hannan. She was united in marriage with Robert W. Lamphier on June 12, 1965, at Sacred Heart Church in Oelwein, Iowa. The couple made Fayette, Iowa, their home for more than 40 years.

Karen graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1962. She worked in food service at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, for several decades. Absolutely no one makes a better potato salad than Karen did. Karen also owned and operated a gift shop in Fayette for a brief time. She enjoyed painting houses with her siblings, playing cards, shopping at Younkers, reading, having sword fights with her grandchildren, and spending time with her family. She became legendary among friends and family for her Twist dance moves and her sugar cookies.

Karen is survived by her two daughters, Denise Lamphier (Charlie Clements) of Grinnell, Iowa, and Janel Lamphier of Urbandale, Iowa; an honorary son, Bill Clark of Fayette; an honorary daughter, Tammy Clark of Sumner, Iowa; four grandchildren Jordan Lamphier (Kate Burnette), Bryce Lamphier Meier (Courtney Lamphier Meier), Margaret Lamphier Meier, and Emory Clements; 4.5 great grandchildren, Dominik, Aaliyah, Tatum, Myles, and J.J. (due in May 2023); her sister, Mildred Smith of Waterloo, Iowa; four sisters-in-law, Linda Post and Cindy Lamphier of Sumner, Iowa, Linda Hannan of Oelwein and Debbie Hannan of Fairbank; as well as many nieces and nephews too numerous to count and beloved family grandpets Brie (Cheese), Doughnut, Chipotle, Sunshine and Basil.

Karen was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and nine of her siblings, Elaine Britten, Jan Rhoades, Jim Hannan, Joe Hannan, Wayne Hannan, Dick Hannan, Kay Bouck, Marge Miller and David Hannan.
