Norman was born on July 9, 1929 near Rockham, South Dakota to Iver and Martha (Morud) Benson. He was raised on a farm near Astoria and graduated from Astoria High School in 1947. Following his education, Norman farmed near Astoria with his father and also helped several area farmers. In 1951, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving much of his time in Korea until 1953. Norman returned to Astoria where he continued to farm until his retirement. On July 18, 2006 he entered the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake, SD. Norman passed away Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the Hendricks Hospital, Hendricks, MN at the age of 78 years and 7 months.

Norman was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Astoria, SD. He was also a member of the Bakken-Engen American Legion Post #103 of Astoria where he always served as a flag carrier. Norman liked to hunt, fish, play bingo and cards with his friends.

Norman is lovingly remembered by his two brothers: Clifford (Juanita) Benson of Sioux Falls, SD and Chester (Opal) Benson of Clear Lake, SD; two sisters: Esther (Robert) Stratton and Alice (Kenneth) Olson all of Sioux Falls, SD; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Barney, Melvin and Arnold; four sisters-in-law: Genevieve, Elfrieda, Helen and Joy.

Funeral services for Norman Benson, age 78, of Astoria, SD will be Friday, February 15, 2008 in the Bethel Lutheran Church, Astoria, SD. Rev. Carlene Rhody will officiate.

Burial with military honors presented by the Bakken-Engen American Legion Post #103 of Astoria will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Astoria, SD. Pallbearers will be: Gary Benson, Brian Benson, David Benson, Milo Olson, Greg Stratton and Mike Benson.

Houseman Family Funeral Home in Clear Lake is in charge of arrangements.
