Chester Alvin Benson was born December 25, 1930 to Iver and Martha (Maurud) Benson of Astoria, SD and his mom always said he was their Christmas blessing. Chester graduated from Astoria High School. While he attended school, he loved to play basketball and he was great help on the farm with his dad and brothers. Chester was called to the Army to serve in the Korean War from 1952 to October of 1953.
Chester married his sweetheart on November 14, 1953 and to this union six children were born: Cheryl, Darla, Deb, Margo, Brian and Brenda. Chester worked at the John Deere shop in Astoria for several years and he drove bus for Astoria School in addition to working at the shop. Chester and Opal owned and operated Benson Café starting in 1973.
He was a proud member of the American Legion and enjoyed their lutefisk suppers. Chester and Opal later moved to Clear Lake where he was a foreman at the Deuel County Highway Department. After retirement, he started driving bus for Deuel School and continued that for 10 years. Chester and Opal were blessed with 12 grandkids and 27 great grandkids. They loved to support their grandkids in all of their activities. Their family gatherings were always a grand affair and everyone was welcome. Chester and Opal enjoyed dancing and always had time for some Bingo.
Chester is lovingly remembered by his wife Opal Benson, Clear Lake, SD; six children: Cheryl (Ron) Squires, Estelline, SD, Darla (Lyndon) Barkve, Brandt, SD, Deb (Eric) Engelbrecht, Clear Lake, SD, Margo (Scott) Sample, Blair, NE, Brenda (John) Yost, Watertown, SD and Brian (Pat) Benson, Blackhawk, SD; 12 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; sister Esther Stratton; sisters-in-law: Marcy Sommervold, Hendricks, MN, Helen Moffatt, Hawardan, IA and Irene Engesmoe, Hendricks, MN; brother-in-law, Joe Engesmoe, Hendricks, MN and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Barney, Melvin, Arnold, Norman and Clifford; sister, Alice; brothers and sisters-in-law and aunts and uncles.
