March 6, 1924 - September 02, 2022

Lorene Baker Sloop, age ninety-eight, passed away at Aspen Trace Assisted Living Facility on Friday, September 2, 2022. She was a former resident of Bargersville.

Survivors include a son; Keaney (Susan) Sloop of Greenwood; three grandchildren: Kyle (Melissa) Sloop of Greenwood, Kea (Brady) Toothaker of Longmont, Colorado, Kurt (Jennifer) Sloop of Washington DC; and six great grandchildren: Cole, Carly, Kye and Kendall Toothaker, Ella Jean and Audrey Sloop. Also surviving are brothers John (Marilyn) Baker and Stephen Jesse (Kay) Baker and several nieces and nephews.

Lorene was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-six years, OJ Sloop, Jr., father Custer Baker, her birth mother Mildred Eccles Baker, and her mother, Jessie Bartley Baker. Also preceding her death were brothers: Lloyd, Sherman V, Noel, and Tim Baker: and sisters Mary Lynn Yates and Ramona Carter.

Lorene was born March 6, 1924, in the village of Providence. She attended Union Twp School and graduated from high school in 1942.

Lorene was a cheerleader for the Union Ramblers all four years of high school along with best friends Doris (Utterback) Deer and Joann (Wheeler) Shuler. She was class salutatorian, finishing second to Evelyn (Park) Brown. She was selected to attend State Fair School and won the Johnson County Oratory contest and took second place at the State Contest.

She was a member of the Providence Christian Church for eighty-six years being baptized on April 12, 1936.

Lorene and OJ grew up together in Providence. They were high school sweethearts. OJ a basketball star for the Ramblers and she a cheerleader. They were married on January 4, 1944 before OJ shipped out to serve in the infantry in Germany during World War II. As OJ went into combat, Lorene went to work at Bridgeport Brass to support the war effort. During the war, she lived with her in-laws, Otto and Mae Sloop.

After the war ended, OJ and Lorene took up residence in Providence. OJ began his coaching career at Union Twp High School. As always, Lorene was his most loyal supporter. Lorene loved the game of basketball. Her father, father-in-law, husband and son were all basketball coaches. However, it is possible that her favorite coach was the legendary IU coach, Bobby Knight.

In 1960 the family moved from Providence to Bargersville as OJ became Director of Athletics at Center Grove High School. Bill Randolph offered Lorene a job at the Franklin Bank and Trust Co. where she was employed for twenty-five years, retiring in 1985. At Franklin Bank, Lorene made many friends that lasted a lifetime.

Lorene was an avid golfer and bowler. She and Dorothy Clements spent many hours together on the links. She convinced her brother John's wife, Marilyn, to become a bowler. Lorene loved to play Euchre. She especially enjoyed having her great grandson, Kye, as a partner.

As the years waned and time took its' toll of friends and family, Lorene stayed in contact with her childhood friend, Ester (Wilson) Moore of Marco Island, FL and Ina Lou Smith, formerly of Union Twp.

A candle will be lit at the Union Twp Alumni Banquet on September 17 in honor of Lorene and the other graduates that have passed away this year. Lorene will not be leading the singing of the school fight song but she will be listening.

Rev. Steven Sorensen will conduct an outdoor service on Friday, September 9, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at the Providence Christian Church. Friends may call at the shelter house from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Burial will be in Harris Cemetery following the service. Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Christian Church or Metro Washington Association of Blind Athletes (gomwaba.org).
