"William, the son of William Hartshorne and Susanna Margaretta Saunders, was born in Alexandria Virginia the 16th of July 1775. By 1801 he and his brother Peter owned an import business in Norfolk, Virginia, including ships and warehouses. One advertisement in the Norfolk Gazette listed the "Good Brig Two Brothers, Peter S Hartshorne master".

"On the 18th of March 1803 William married Mary Clark Wilson, the widow of Rev. James Wilson, a Presbyterian minister. William was a Quaker and on 27 Dec 1806 he was "disowned" by the Quaker Church for "marrying out of unity". Mary had four children from her first marriage and she and William had a son, Saunders William Hartshorne born on 18 Dec 1803.

"The Embargo Act of December 22nd 1807,(passed by Congress) having become the law of the land, the ports were of course closed: exportation nearly ceased, and business in the towns on the coast was suddenly and sadly interrupted." William, having lost his business, took his family first to Alexandria where his parents lived and then to Baltimore where he bought a bakery and then later became a commission merchant.

"In 1814 both William's stepsons fought at North Point and Fort McHenry defending Baltimore. In 1818 William moved his family to Cincinnati Ohio. He is listed as a merchant in the 1819 Cincinnati Directory under Hartshorne & Barnes.

"William's step daughters, Margareta Elizabeth Wilson and Mary Bankhead Wilson both married in Cincinnati. Mary Bankhead married Daniel Julius Caswell and moved to New Orleans. Margareta Elizabeth married the Rev. Samuel Johnston. After the death of her husband, Margareta ran a boarding house where William lived from 1831 until his death. His son, Saunders William became a ship builder and President of the Marine Railway and Dry Dock Co. William died on 8 Nov 1836."

Died,
Suddenly, on the night of the 8th inst. William Hartshorne, in the 61st year of his age. His friends, and the friends of the family, are requested to attend his funeral, from the house of Mrs. Johnson, on 7th street, to-morrow morning, Friday, at 10 o'clock.
