Saunders William Hartshorne was born 18 Dec 1803 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was the son of William Hartshorne and Mary Clark Wilson. His grandparents William Hartshorne and Susanna Margaretta Saunders lived in Alexandria, Virginia, and Saunders was baptized there 5 Jan 1804. Saunders father William owned ships and warehouses in Norfolk. When Saunders was four Congress passed the Embargo Act which destroyed many import businesses including his fathers. The family moved briefly to Alexandria, Virginia, and then to Baltimore. After the War of 1812 the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Saunders worked at a steam sawmill as a carpenter. By 1846 he was working for Parson's and Lytle, Shipbuilder. His occupation in 1868 is listed as President Marine Railway and Dry Dock Co. They built steamships, including the Natchez which engaged in the famous race from New Orleans to St. Louis. Saunders married Ann Eliza Burrows, daughter of Stephen Burrows and Sarah Meeker Tunis, on the 1st of February 1831 in Cincinnati. Saunders and Ann had eight children only four of which lived to adulthood. Julia Burrows Hartshorne, Mary Hartshorne, William Burrows Hartshorne and William Saunders Hartshorne died as infants or small children. Sarah Janney Hartshorne married Rowland Ellis, Mary Elizabeth Hartshorne married Edward Tatnall Lea, Anna L Hartshorne married Albert Hannaford Mitchell, and Clara Hartshorne married Giles Drayton Longstreth.
In 1844 members of the Cincinnati Horticultural Society formed a cemetery association and in 1845 opened Spring Grove Cemetery. Saunders bought a large lot in Section 54, Lot 93. He died 25 May 1887 and was buried in Spring Grove the next day.
His lot contains thirty seven relatives including his wife Ann, Ann's parents and siblings, children, and grandchildren. In 1852 Saunders removed family members who had died before 1845 and were buried in the Presbyterian Family Vault on Elm Street and reburied them in his lot in Spring Grove.
His obituary reads, "The funeral of Saunders W. Hartshorne, 84, a pioneer widely known as 'Sandy', who died in Avondale yesterday, takes place today. He was for many years associated with the late Capts. Pat Rogers and H. Carrol in the Cincinnati marine railway and dry dock company. Born in Norfolk, Va, December 19, 1803, he came to Cincinnati in 1818 and married Miss Ann Eliza Burrows, daughter of Stephen Burrows, in 1831. She survives him, as does one daughter, Mrs. R. Ellis.
