FORMER SAFETY HEAD HERE DIES

Funeral services for Harold Sturgeon, 52, 2728 Third St., a former superintendent of Public Safety, who died Sunday night at a hospital after a long illness of three weeks, will be at 2 pm Wednesday at the Third Presbyterian Church. Rev. R.N. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery where Tyrian Lodge A.F. & A.M. Lodge will conduct graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Albert Ferdig, Leroy Ferdig, Phil Kimmish, George Cardwell, G.A. Shanke, and Ardell Petty. The Rutledge Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Mr. Sturgeon was a former member of the board of Education and was widely known in orginized labor circles here. He was elected superintendent of public safety in 1938, and was reelected in 1941. He resigned several months later. He was elected to the board of education in 1934, when he led the entire field of candidates. He was named by the Sioux City Trade and Labor Assembly in 1934 to represent labor on the old N.R.A. adjustment committee. He was recording secretary of the assembly for many years. Mr. Sturgeon for several years was associate editor with Wallace Short of the former Unionist and Public forum.
He was born in Sioux City Oct 15, 1899. For the last several years, he was owner-operator of the Viking Tavern 1124 4th Street. He was a Mason, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Loyal Order of Moose, and the Woodsman of the World. Mr. Sturgeon attended Cooper grade schooland Central High School.
Survivors include the widow;Esther, a daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Williams; a song, Harold A.; his mother, Mrs. Leila Sturgeon, all of Sioux City; two brothers: Ralph of Sioux City, and Myron of Long Beach, CA; five sisters: Mrs. Mary Caselton, Mrs. Dorothy Agee, Mrs. Fred Nash, and Mrs. Helen Moon all of Sioux City; Mrs. Blanche Eddleston of Long Beach, and two grandchildren.
