The daughter of Caddo Lake/Red River steamboat captain, Ben B. Bonham prior to him marrying Lucy Rives. Belle is the only known child of Ben and this wife. Belle married James Thomas Tanner on 18 June 1884 in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. They had two known children: James Thomas "J. Tom" Tanner and Susie Tanner. Belle and JT Tanner lived in Garfield, Caddo Parish; in 1898 JTT was made postmaster of the village. In the 1900 US Federal census for Caddo Parish, Belle and her children were living on Laurel St. in Shreveport while JTT was living on a farm in Ward 2. In the summer of 1904, Belle filed for an "absolute" divorce and custody of her children. Her reasoning was to stay in control of the land and mineral rights she had inherited and invested in. Sue contracted pulmonary tuberculosis and for the 1910 and 1920 census, she and her mother were living in El Paso, Texas. Son J. Tom became active in Shreveport politics and finances become secretary-treasurer of the city among many other appointments.
