Services for former Shreveport Commissioner of Finance J. Tom Tanner, 94, were scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today at Osborn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. William E. Hull, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was to be in Forest Park Cemetery.
Mr. Tanner died Saturday in Schumpert Medical Center after a brief illness.
The Garfield native served as secretary-treasurer of the city of Shreveport for 35 years from 1930 to 1965. In 1965 he was elected commissioner of finance in a special election to fill an unexpired term. Mr. Tanner retired from that post in 1966 after serving as secretary of the city's retirement fund for 36 years and co-authoring the city's original retirement charter.
Mr. Tanner also was a manager of the Mooringsport Bank, mayor of Mooringsport and a state legislator from Caddo Parish in the early 1920's. He served as state president of the LSU Alumni Association in 1941, was active in Kappa Sigma fraternity and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife, Lady Jane Ellis Tanner, of Shreveport.
Pallbearers were to be Dr. Frank Jackson, Stuart Burris, Sinclair Kouns, Guy Oakes, Bobby Ellis, Arthur Morgan, J. W. Mitchell, Lloyd Turner, Bill Slattery and Robert Garland.
