The story about the oval family portrait:

It was harvest time, mid-1920s, my Grandpa Joe Kukrall was away from the farm helping another farmer with threshing. A man came to their farm where gt. Aunt Emma Kukrall was helping sister-in-law Grandma Anna K. with canning, etc. He offered a service of photo enlargement with the photos mounted in large oval frames with convex glasses- two for $5.00. Grandma did not want to spend a dime without her husband's approval but Aunt Emma encouraged her to do it thinking it was a good deal- and she did. The results were an oval portrait of the whole family, which can be seen here. There was one more child to come and Rosa may be pregnant at the time. The other oval photo was a close-up of just the mother and father's faces together. Since it was his family in the photos Grandpa didn't mind. Luckily this was done, as the smaller photo used has since gone missing. I inherited these when Grandma died in 1980. Being an only child with no kids and lately retired, I have passed them on to Cousin Wayne Kukrall who is the only one of our generation who has a son that will (hopefully) carry on the Kukrall name.
