Ivan is the son of Simion Merkell Loskutoff and Dadeya Nikali Buchnoff. He is one of ten known children: Mary, John, William, Jack, Markel, Nickoli, Alexai, Emma, Hanya, and Matrona.
He married Paula Serge Bogdanoff before 1902 in Russia. They immigrated in 1907. The family initially lived with his mother, who was widowed at 1023 De Haro Street in San Francisco, CA (Potrero Hill). John was a rag collector. By 1920, he was still living at 1023 De Haro Street, he owned his own home and worked at the shipyards. By 1930 he lived at 850 Wisconsin Street in San Francisco, CA (Potrero Hill) and worked in the shipyard.
