Ward H. Ashby

Ward was the fifth child born to Ambrosine (Zina) Hacking Ashby and Stephen Wells Ashby. He was born December 5, 1917 at Vernal, Utah across the street from his grandfather James Hacking's house. Dr. Rich was the doctor at his birth.

He attended Maeser Elementary and Uintah High School. He sang in a male chorus and played the clarinet in the band. He also sang in the Jr. Choir in Maeser Ward. He especially liked dancing. Ward graduated from Uintah High School in May 1936.

When Ward was a teenager, activities were enjoyed as a group when young people would get together for house parties and to go to the canyon. Ward also enjoyed sleigh riding in a bobsled with straw and heated rocks by which they kept warm. The family usually had two to four horses to ride, which he enjoyed very much. The main mode of travel was by horseback. Young people would go on hay rides in the summer.

Ward married first Norma Jorgensen on December 16, 1938 when he was twenty-one years old. They were divorced December 14, 1939. He married Eva June Heaps June 25, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have two sons, Dennis Ward and David Lon Ashby.

June was born November 10, 1917 at Escalante, Garfield, Utah to Thomas Alma Heaps and Sarah Edith Shurtz Heaps. She was baptized July 4, 1926. June attended Escalante Elementary and Escalante High Schools. Church positions she held are Relief Society President and teacher, Young Women's President and teacher, and temple worker since 1982 at the Jordan River Temple - fifteen years and still working.

She enjoys reading, quilting and temple work.

Ward had worked as a farm hand, sheepherder, cowboy, arms plant worker in World War II, truck driver, oil well roughneck, oil field motorman, and in the timber. He also worked breaking horses. He broke his first horse when he was eleven years old, having caught it around Bonanza, Utah. In high school he broke horses for people, would ride them to school for a month, and was paid $15.00. After moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, he also broke horses for other people. With his son, Dennis, he showed paint horses and won awards. He worked thirty-eight years as a carpet layer.

Ward was close to his sister, Sara, who died when she was fifteen years old. They helped each other with their work on the farm. When she died he missed her very much. He was also close to his cousin, Lela Hall Carter. They would ride horses in the hills and talk over their problems.

Church positions Ward held were: Sunday School President, Scoutmaster and scout committee member, Elders President, Seventies President, High Priest Group Leader and Jordan River Temple Ordinance worker for nine years.

He had arthritis and was not able to be very active in his later years.

Ward enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1996 he and June had been married 53 years. He lived in Midvale, Utah for fourty-eight years.
