Pearl Tenney Romney On Tuesday, August 17th 2021 our dearest mother, Pearl Tenney Romney was 97 years old when she finally passed peacefully through the veil at the Arizona Pioneers' Home in Prescott, Arizona. Pearl had lived as a widow for over 17 years in the Arizona Pioneer's Home. She really enjoyed the association and the friendships with the residents that were fostered throughout the years. Our Family wishes to express our deep gratitude and appreciation to all those in the Pioneer's Home who so tenderly loved and cared for our Mother Pearl.
Pearl was born on January 12, 1924, in Thatcher, Arizona to Nathan Orson and Mary Myrtle Wear Tenney. She was the youngest of ten children. Her mother Myrtle was raised in Texas then moved to New Mexico for a teaching job. Her father Nathan Orson Tenney was a cowboy and rancher living in New Mexico. After they met and married, they moved to Arizona to begin raising their Family.
Nathan and Myrtle had ten children: Naydene Tenney Lane (Orson Lane), NS Tenney, W. Delbert Tenney (Annie Wilkins), Opal Tenney Goodman, Allen (Everett Goodman and Merle Allen), N. Boyd Tenney (Rachel Teeples and Madge Haines Balmes), Nina Belle Tenney Parry (Richard Parry), Lyman C. Tenney (Alaire Browning), Eudora Carol Tenney Patterson (Richard Patterson), Edythe Margaret Tenney Hendrix, Bennett (J.P. Hendrix and Leo Bennett).
Pearl's husband, George Lee Romney, preceded her in death in 2003. Three of her children, Gerald Lee Romney, Shawna Romney Jackson and Michele Romney Garvin have also preceded her in death. Pearl is survived by her two daughters, Marsha Romney Stratton (Clifford Stratton) and Tamara Romney Parry (Douglas Parry) plus two sons- in-laws, Norman F. Jackson and Craig C. Garvin and one daughter-in-law, Patricia (Oates) Romney. She is survived by 30 grandchildren, 107 great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren, with a total of 145 descendants and two "more in the oven."
In 1925, a severe drought forced her father out of the cattle business in Southern Arizona (Graham County). The family moved to Prescott, Arizona where her father purchased a goat ranch with 5,000 head of Angora goats. On the goat ranch they sheared the goats twice a year and sold the mohair for the going price. They also had a milk goat dairy where they delivered raw goat's milk to the Veterans who had tuberculosis in the VA Hospital at Fort Whipple. Along with her siblings, Pearl helped care for the goats in Prescott and then spent much of her summers herding goats in Skull Valley. This allowed her time to read as well as just having the time to get to work side by side with her brothers and sisters who she loved and admired so much.
Pearl attended Jefferson, Lincoln and Washington Elementary schools then she graduated from Prescott High School. At age 19 she moved to Idaho to live with her sister Eudora with the intention of attending college. After one semester she decided to live with her sister Opal in Idaho and work as a telephone operator. She later returned home to Arizona and received a mission call from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was assigned to the East Central States Mission which included (Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia) for 18 months.
Pearl was someone you could call a "Jill of all Trades" anything she put her mind to, she could do! She made everything from Prom and Debutant Ball Dresses to making and decorating Wedding Cakes. The different jobs she had were waitress work, Secretary for the Arizona Highway Department. She worked for the Prescott Recreation Department and taught dancing at the Armory and arts & crafts in the public schools. Later, in Northern Arizona she was the Recreation Director for the military youth at the Navajo Army Depot west of Flagstaff.
Pearl with her husband Lee, served missions in Sydney, Australia and Mesa, Arizona, for the Church Employment Center. When her husband Lee was called as a Stake Patriarch, she was called as his scribe.
Throughout Pearl's life she lived in Graham County, Arizona, Salt Lake City, Utah, Prescott, Phoenix, Flagstaff, Cottonwood, Mesa and Snowflake, Arizona. Her final days were spent back where she had grown up, in Prescott at the Arizona Pioneer Home.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 28th, 2021 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1001 Ruth St, Prescott, AZ 86301 at 10:00 a.m. The Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m., prior to the funeral services.
There will also be a ZOOM Podcast online for those interested in watching.
