A cenotaph is found at the Oak Hill Cemetery of Clear Lake at Clear Lake, Illinois, where his parents are buried.Leader "Captain George Donner of the infamous Donner Party
Got lots of info from the Donner decendants of Brentwood, California.George Albert Donner Jr was the son of George Albert Donner Sr and Mary Margaret Huff.
George married Susannah J Holloway 1790-1829 of North Carolina. They married 12 Dec 1809 in Jessamine County, Kentucky, and had five children including:
* WiIlliam Donner 1812-1867
* Mary Donner Weaver Harmon
His second wife was Mary Blue Tennant 1800-1837 of illinois. They married 10 June 1829 and had two daughters:
* Elitha Cumi Donner, Mrs Perry McCoon, Mrs Ben Wilder
* Leanna Charity Donner, Mrs John App 1834-1930
His third wife was Tamsen Wheelwright Eustis Dozier Donner 1801-1847, the widow of Tully Dozier. They married 24 May 1839 in Illinois and had three daughters:
* Frances Eustis Donner, Mrs William Wilder1840-1921
* Georgia Anna Donner, Mrs Wahington Babcock 1841-1911
* Elizabeth Poore Donner Houghton, Mrs Sherman Houghton 1843-1922

George and his family joined many other families in a wagon train traveling west, leaving Missouri on the Oregon Trail in the spring of 1846. Due to a series of unfortunate events, they were stranded in the Sierra Nevada snow covered mountains until rescued by three separate relief parties. Out of 87 members, only 48 survived. George and his wife Tamsen, his brother Jacob and sister-in-law would not survive, George received a cut to his hand that turned to gangrene, he and his wife chose to stay after all three rescue parties had left.
