Red was born in Webster City, IA. She was one of 11 children, the daughter of the late Roy and Agatha (Fisher) Norlin. Red graduated from Boxholm High School in 1951, where she was an All-State basketball player for 3 years. In her late teens, she also played for the Iowa Women's Regional Softball League, winning several championships across 6 states. Red moved to San Francisco, CA, with her best friend, Gloria (Eissler) Higgins, in 1953.
Red met and married the love of her life, Harry Arnold Higgins Sr, on Sept. 10, 1955. They moved to Walnut Creek in 1970 where they raised their three children.
Red was employed with the Contra Costa Times from 1976 to 1996, as the Manager of the Print Shop, under Dean Lesher. Her employment at the Times were some of the most honorable and cherished times of her life, where she made some of her longest lasting friendships.
There was never a dull moment with Red. You could either find her gardening, feeding the raccoons from her back porch, telling jokes at Peet's Coffee & Tea, or singing alongside her granddaughter at the East Bay Banjo Club. She was an avid sports fan and never missed a game. The Golden State Warriors, SF Giants and SF 49er's truly lost their biggest fan.
Red is survived by her three children, Harry Higgins Jr (Julie) of Grass Valley, Michael Higgins (Beth) of El Dorado Hills, Kasey Torres (Roque) of Concord, and grandchildren, Jenice, Keith, Damian, Rachel, Mariah, Jared, Naomi and Danielle.
