Bernie is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeanne English Zach. Daughters: Cynthia Peek and Tamara Ghorbani-Elizeh. Son: Timothy Zach. Son-in-law: Lee Peek. Daughter-in-law: Neeraj Saddi Zach. Grandchildren: Tara Morse; Roya, Kian and Kara Ghorbani-Elizeh; and Andrew and Priya Zach. And many nephews and nieces.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, ten siblings and grandson Tyler Morse. A veteran of the Korean War, Bernie retired after working at the United States Postal Service for 30 years in Omaha, Nebraska.
Bernie grew up on a farm in Nebraska during the Great Depression, which may explain why he was such an accomplished gardener, one who could make nearly anything grow under whichever adverse conditions the Good Lord threw his way. Despite his humble upbringing, Bernie was naturally talented and everything he touched turned to gold. A self-taught man whose knowledge of history, art, current affairs and sports was truly amazing. Bernie was a self-made artist, producing works ranging from landscapes using oil paint to yard sculptures using fallen tree limbs. Bernie was quick with a joke, and had an infectious laugh. He had the uncanny ability to find happiness in daily activities. He was beloved by everyone who had the good fortune to call him friend. Bernie was always humble, gracious and kind, adored by his grandchildren and his community alike. He was committed to his family and to his Catholic faith throughout his life.
Services will be held at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Roswell, Georgia on Wednesday, August 25 at 10:30 A.M. Internment will take place at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Georgia on a date to be determined.
