Joseph John Zach

July 10, 1920 – May 15, 2007
SALEM - Joe was born at home on the family farm in Pierce, Nebraska, July 10, 1920 to Johanna and Ignatz Zach. Joe grew up during America's Great Depression. The middle of eleven children, Joe played baseball with his siblings and on summer evenings his family could be heard a half-mile away singing from the front porch. Joe served in the Navy during WWII in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged after two tours of duty.Joe and Catherine (Fehringer) were married 58 years, they raised their five children together. They moved to Oregon in 1955 from Colorado. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, fishing, gardening, music, and in earlier years he sang in the church choir. He was particularly fond of babies and family picnics.Hardworking and devoted to his family, Joe was a sheet metal worker at Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Salem for 27 years. He also maintained a small farm when his family was young. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Upon retirement he volunteered for the St. Vincent de Paul Society helping with food distribution.
Joe is survived by Catherine, four siblings: Jerry, Lucy, Ann, and Bernie; five children and their spouses, Lee and Cathy Zach, Marilyn Zach, Judy and Jon Hathaway, Ron Zach, and Vicki and Kevin Zielinski; twelve grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Joe will be remembered for his perseverance, his dedication to family, and his sensitive nature.
Visitation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 20, at Keizer Funeral Chapel. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 21, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, officiated by Father Charles Zach, his nephew. A rosary will precede the service at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. in Portland.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Marion Polk Food Share, 1660 Salem Industrial Drive NE. Salem, Oregon 97303. Arrangements are by Keizer Funeral Chapel.
