Sam Adams 94 of Wellington peacefully passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2021 at North Fairview Cemetery with Tom Anderson, retired Church of Christ minister from Memphis officiating. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.

He was born July 14, 1926 in Rosboro, AR, to James Hobker "Hob" and Lucinda Catherine Hurt Adams. He attended school at Rosboro and graduated from Quail High School in 1948 after returning from service in WW II. He went on to study frame construction and electrical wiring at what is now West Texas A&M University in Canyon.

At age 16, Sam put together enough money for a bus ticket to Portland, OR, where a cousin had sent word that welders were needed in the shipyards. He attended welding school and worked there until he joined the Navy in 1944.

Sam served aboard an aircraft carrier during WW II and was called back to serve in the Korean War. He loved his country and was proud to always fly the flag. He was a life member of the VFW.

He married his high school sweetheart from Arkansas, Jeanice Newcomb on February 14, 1978 in Wellington after a 35-year hiatus. She died in 2013.

Sam owned and operated a hardware store, laid floor covering, and did remodeling in Wellington until he retired working for the public in 1988. They then moved to Glenwood, AR to help care for their aging mothers. He continued working, remodeling their home, and building woodcrafts for sale, donating the proceeds to the Glenwood Fire Department. He returned to Wellington in 2013 to be near his son's family. He finally fully retired in 2016.

In Wellington Sam had served on the city council, the school board, as a board member for St. Joseph's Hospital, was an active supporter of the Boy Scouts and over saw construction of the new sanctuary for the FUMC. He continued to serve his community in Glenwood overseeing the construction of a new senior center. He was honored by Arkansas Secretary of State Charlie Daniels as the Senior Citizen of the Year in 2008.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers J.C., Herman, Raymond, Fletcher, and Franklin: by 2 sisters Pearl and Verna Sue and by 2 stepsons Mike Barjenbruch and Robert Riddle.

His survivors include his son Larry Adams of Wellington; a sister Betty McNeil of Amity, AR; 4 stepchildren including Phyllis Dye and her husband Gary of Wellington; 3 grandchildren Cole and Sawyer Adams both of Wellington and Kylee Adams of Pampa; 19 step grandchildren; 11 step great grandchildren; 3 step great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his extended family in Glenwood whom he loved dearly, the families of John Plyler, Everett Smith, and Wic Howell.

If you wish to make a donation in his memory, Sam would tell you to give to something of your choosing.
