US Senator. He graduated from Harvard University in 1881, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1883 and commenced to practice law in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives (1884 to 1886) and a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate (1886 to 1897). In 1897, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 61.
