Sarah was the daughter of Jeremiah Smith Hubbard Boies & Mary Frances Caroline Thomas. Her grandfather was Judge William Hubbard, when he passed away his son Jeremiah was adopted by Uncle Jeremiah Smith Boies. Her father added Boies as his last name. Sarah's ancestor William Hubbard graduated from the first class of Harvard in 1642. Her g.g.g. grandfather Philip Thomas was a member of the Governor's Council in Maryland. Another ancestor was Col. Samuel Chew who was a member of the same council. Another ancestor was Chief Justice Benjamin Chew of PA. She had culture, refinement, unusual intelligence w/ phenomenal & magnificent beauty & dignity. She married Richard Penrose in 1858 and had six living sons: Senator Boies,Charles,Richard,Spencer,Francis & Philip. She devoted her life to her children teaching them till her death. Her death was accidental, she stood at the top of the stairs as 10 year old Philip ran past her. She tripped and fell down the stairs to her death. In his grief Richard blamed his son the rest of his life. All her sons loved her & talked of her often wishing for her presence,kindness & advice.
