Richard was the son of Senator Charles Bingham Penrose. He graduated from Dickinson College with a degree in Law, he entered the University of Pennsylvania to study medicine and graduated in 1849. He was an outstanding doctor, professor & surgeon. He was one of the founders of the Childrens Hospital in Philadelphia, the American Gynecological Society & Gynacean Hospital. He worked at the Philadelphia Hospital & Southern Home for Children. During the Civil War he was surgeon at Satterlee Hospital.He was a member of College of Physicians,American Philosophical Society & PA Academy of Natural Sciences. He married Sarah Hannah Boies in 1858 and had six sons:Senator Boies Penrose,Charles Bingham,Richard Jr,Spencer,Francis & Philip.
