Hester J. King was born in September of 1878 in Johnston County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Stark "Starkey" King and his third wife, Zilphia Benson King. She had two full siblings and 17 half-siblings. With Robert David Johnson, Hester became the mother of Pearl Roberson King Baker. Hester never married, and Robert went on to marry Lou Zanie Johnson and have four more children. Hester's daughter Pearl married Roby Howard Baker, and they lived in Selma, Johnston County. Years later Pearl moved to Florida with her youngest daughter.

Hester died in Smithfield, Johnston County on January 20, 1921 at age 42 of cancer of the cervix and stomach. She had had unsuccessful cancer surgery in December of 1920. Her death certificate lists her burial place as the "Johnson Grave Yard" in Johnston County. It is probably the same cemetery (identified in records as the "Johnson-Benson Cemetery," and also known as the "David Paul Johnson Cemetery") in which her mother was buried.

Thanks so much to all the King family researchers for much of this information. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions. I hope someone will add Hester's photo to this site and a link to her daughter Pearl.
