Richard graduated from Boiling Springs High School in 1944 and Gettysburg College in 1952. Richard was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He flew for and was a past commander of the Civil Air Patrol. Richard retired from Allstate Insurance in 1984, after over 30 years of service working as a manager. He was a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg, where he formerly served as a trustee. Richard loved the outdoors. In three years, he hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. For over 10 years, until he was 90, Richard maintained a ten-mile area of the Trail. He traveled and camped throughout Canada and the United States, and visited all 50 states, fishing in saltwater, creeks, and rivers.
