Daniel Lee Voiles was born March 21, 1952 in Alton, IL to the late William Lee Voiles and Mary Alice Best. He died at age 68 at his home January 19, 2021 in Pottsboro, TX after battling lung cancer. To honor his wishes, his children will be taking his ashes back home to Illinois for a family service at the Eldred Memorial Gardens, details to be shared at a later date.

He was an expert marksman and spent his life outdoors, first back home in Eldred, IL working as a farmer for the family seed company (Columbiana Seed) and then as a fishing guide on Lake Texoma in Grayson County, TX. But his real passions were his children, Amber Lea Voiles and Lucus Christopher Spears Voiles, and his grandchildren. Lucus lives with his wife, Sarah, and their four children Lucus, Samantha, Millicent, and Charles. Amber lives with her partner, Bradley Pierce Brown; they are expecting a baby girl this week.

As a young man, Dan attended grade school in Eldred, Illinois, one year at Carrollton, IL High School, and three years at Western Military Academy in Alton, Illinois, graduating salutatorian in 1970. After attending Columbia College in Columbia, MO, he moved with his wife at the time, Betsy Spears, back to Eldred to work and start a family. In 1981 the family moved to Grayson County, TX.

He was a scientist, creator, and tinkerer at heart that was generally curious about the unexplained. In addition to fixing everyone's boat, car, lawnmower, and golf cart in the neighborhood, on the farm in the 70s, he received a government grant and successfully built a cellulosic alcohol plant that could convert rejected corn seed into ethanol to help offset fuel costs. More recently, he built a biomass downdraft gasifier that could run his truck engine with only wood as the fuel. He always said he could take the leaves from your yard and run your lawn mower... And he really could.

Dan is preceded in death by his parents William and Mary and brothers Jon and Robert Voiles. In addition to his children and grandchildren, he is survived by his brother Alan Voiles and remembered by friends as "one of the good guys". He was kind, generous, thoughtful, and always looked out for the people who were fortunate enough to know him. Along with his family, Dan loved golf. He played 18 holes with his buddy Gary and other friends most days up to his passing and will be missed by all.
