William F. "Bill" Hume Sr., 88, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center. He was born at Colinton, Alberta, on Jan. 5, 1914, to Frederick and Susie Hess Hume. During his childhood the family lived in north Lincoln County and Kalispell.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, returning to Montana following his honorable discharge.

He married Marie Landry on April 1, 1954, in Missoula.
He resided in the Flathead Valley before returning to north Lincoln County, working in the family sawmill business, F.R. Hume & Sons. He later owned and operated the Kootenai Service Store in Rexford until the town was relocated during the Libby Dam project. He moved back to the Fortine area where he engaged in horse logging until the time of his retirement. He also managed the Town Pump in Eureka and Browning.
Survivors include his wife, Marie, of Fortine; sons, Fred Hume of Sapulpa, Okla., Bill Hume Jr. of Everett, Wash., Michael Hume of Fountain, Colo., and Ed Hume of Fortine; daughters, Barbara Bass of Libby, Lori Bush of Spokane, Donna Bernesky of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Ann Marie Wilson of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Tillie Butts of Fortine; brothers, J. Pat Hume of Fortine, Robert Hume of Bandon, Ore., and Franklin Hume of Tacoma, Wash.; sisters, Julia Conrad of Spokane, and May Lee of Sun City, Ariz; 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Hume, in 1999.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Fortine Community Church with the Rev. Darrell Newby officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Fortine Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Eureka.
