Parents August and Hulda (Summerfelt) Rickert, ethnic Germans from the Grand Duchy of Posen, Kingdom of Prussia (Modern-day Poland), left Europe with their son Ernest in 1883. Second son Fred was born while en route aboard the ship, the steam-powered ocean liner Ohio. The family settled in Menominee, Wisconsin and had more children while there. In about 1901 the family relocated to Longbranch, Washington.
Fred married Nettie Crevison, daughter of pioneer settlers William Jackson Creviston and Sarah (Bradshaw) Creviston. Fred and Nettie had three daughters, Catherine "Kitty", Mabel, Ida and Georgia, and son Fred.
