Fred A. Elze
March 31, 1901 - March 4, 1981

Frederick (Freidrich) Albert Elze was born on March 31, 1901, at Westcliffe, Colorado, the tenth child of Martha Louise Ograske and Robert W. Elze. When he was a small baby, his health was very poor and his mother in prayer promised to guide her small son's efforts into service to the lord if his life would be spared. He was baptised into the christian faith at Hope Lutheran Church, Westcliffe, in 1901; where he was also confirmed in 1916. He left Colorado to attend St. John's College in Winfield, Kansas, from which he graduated in 1922. He graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, in June 1925 and was ordained and installed in the Holy Ministry at Zion Lutheran Church, Imperial, Nebraska, on September 20, 1925.

During his 55 years as a minister in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, Pastor Elze served the following congregations:
1925-1935 Zion and Immanuel, Imperial and Champion, Nebraska
1935-1943 St. Peter's; Gresham, Nebraska
1943-1954 St. John's; Galva, Iowa
1954-1967 Bethel; Sutherland, Iowa
1963-1975 Trinity; Royal, Iowa

Besides his work as a pastor, he also served in various offices of the Lutheran Circuits in Nebraska and Iowa. He enjoyed many interests, which included fishing, golf, and gardening, which gave him the opportunity to relax and be outside with nature.
After serving his Lord for over 50 years, on October 1, 1975, he retired from the active ministry and retired to Beatrice, Nebraska, residing at 700 Lincoln, and there joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He assisted various congregations around the community whenever possible as long as he was physically able to do so. The Rev. Fred A. Elze entered Lutheran Hospital in Beatrice, Nebraska on Saturday, February 14, 1981, where he died at 3:11 am on Ash Wednesday, March 4, 1981, attaining the age of 79 years, 11 months, 3 days. Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel, 708 North 6th Street, Beatrice, was in charge of the funeral. Body was in state at the church one hour preceding the service. A family prayer service was held at 1:45 pm on Friday, March 6th, in the basement of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 10th and High Street, Beatrice. The funeral was at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Michael A. Keyne officiating, assisted by the Rev. Alvin V. Kollmann of Collinsville, Illinois, nephew of Esther Elze. Graveside service was held at 10:00 am on Saturday, with Pastor Kollmann officiating. Interment was at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, 5701 Center Street, Omaha, Nebraska. He was survived by three sisters: Mrs. Selma Lensch of Westcliffe, Colorado; Mrs. Bertha Fischer of Denver, Colorado; and Mrs. Lena Rogers of Santa Fe, NM. He was preceeded in death by five brothers: Robert, Otto, Carl (Charlie), Arnold, and Gottlieb, and one sister, Christiana Suzie Schwarz.
