There isn't a lot of information to be found for Laura Elizabeth Weir other than that is the name given on her Alabama Deaths and Burials Index. It also gives her father as William McElyea thus giving us a maiden name. The index only give an estimated birth date of 1874 but her tombstone date of birth is much later than that being October 9, 1881, the death place is Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama but her burial place was Wallace Cemetery.
There has been no census reports found with William McElyea as head of household with a daughter named Laura. The first she is found is in 1900 where she is found living in Limestone County, Alabama with John Allen Blair Weir and his wife Nancy and their four children, Clarence Edward, Sidney Leonard, Tula, and Augustus Theordore better known as Guss T.
Laura is listed as a 23 year old widow and the family's servant. Even though she is listed as a widow, her maiden name was given. Less than two months later John Allen Weir's wife Nancy passed away leaving him to raise four children on his own. Laura must have stayed on to help as in the 1910 census of Limestone County, Alabama they are married and give the years married as 9, which would make their marriage year 1901. The family grew by two as John Allen Blair and his second wife Laura had a daughter Mary B in 1903 and another Edna Earl in 1910. In the 1910 census shows that Clarence Edward oldest son of John and his first wife Nancy had moved out of the house and the oldest son now living at home was Sidney age 22, Tula and Gus now 19 and 16 children of John and Nancy are still living with their father and step mother and 6 year old Mary. Edna Earl had not been born at the time of the census, but was born later that same year.
By 1920 the Limestone County, Alabama census shows that all of John and Nancy's children have left the home and John is now abt 64, his second wife Laura is 44 and their daughters Mary is 16 and Edna is 9.
By 1930 John is now 73, Laura is 55, Mary has moved from home and Edna E is now 19. This would be the last census that John and Laura would be in as a family as John passed in 1932.
Laura was found living with her daughter Mary and her husband Aaron Brackeen in the 1940 Limestone County, Alabama census, she was listed as a 66 year old widow and the mother-in-law of the head of household Aron Brackeen.
Laura passed away in December of 1963 and was laid to rest next to her second husband John Allen Blair Weir. The 1900 census listed her as a widow, her death index record gives her father as William McElyea and John Allen Blair Weir's death index record gives his spouse's name as Laura Warrick. All that is known as to who her first husband was is that he was a Warrick.
It has been my conclusion to assume that the info above is correct concerning the maiden and married name of Laura before her marriage to John Allen Blair Weir given the info on census reports and death indexes she should be Laura Elizabeth McElyea Warrick Weir. If anyone finds this info incorrect or can verify and give the given name of her deceased first husband and her mother's name please contact the manager of this memorial.
