A retired postmaster with the U.S. Postal Service in Maringouin with 34 years of service, he died at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 74 and a lifelong resident of Maringouin. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He served many years on the U.S. draft board. He enjoyed many years of coaching youth baseball and being involved with the Boy Scouts. He served on the board of directors for the Bank of Maringouin for the past 25 years. He was an avid hunter and cherished the many years he spent in the Atchafalaya Basin. Visiting at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Hall, Maringouin from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday. Religious services at the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Shelton Fabre. Interment in church cemetery. Survived by his wife of 45 years, Peggy Blackwell Jewell; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Colette Berthier Jewell and Duane and Sherry Beach Jewell, all of New Roads, Matt and Kay Badeaux Jewell, and Joseph Lubin Jewell III, all of Maringouin; 10 grandchildren, Holden, Austin, Lucas, Mason, Clay, Colin, Cade and Tana Jewell, Galen and husband Brian Graffia, and Ashley Honeycutt; two sisters, Bonita Jewell Hubbard and Helen Jewell Landry, both of Maringouin; a brother and sister-in-law, Wylie Barrow Jewell and Shirley Jewell, Maringouin; a sister-in-law, Betty Jo Jewell, Baton Rouge; first cousin and best buddy, Charles W. Row III and his wife, Ann Row, Baton Rouge; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Wylie B. Jewell Jr., Robert C. Hubbard, Judge James Best, Harvey Best III, Lane Landry, Edwin Jewell Jr., Dr. David Jewell and Baylor Jewell. Special thanks to Dr. James O'Neal, the Rev. Shelton Fabre, Elliott's Pharmacy, members of the board of directors of the Bank of Maringouin, members of Bayou Black Hunting Club, colleagues at the Maringouin Post Office and Hospice Care of Louisiana.
