Wylie Barrow Jewell Sr. died on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Mid City. He was 86 years old and a native and resident of Maringouin. He was born on July 19, 1922, in Maringouin, the third child of Mattie Wylie and Joseph Lubin Jewell. He grew up in Iberville Parish at Historic Tanglewild Plantation and graduated from Shady Grove High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces and served with distinction as a bomber pilot in World War ll. After the war, he entered LSU where he majored in business administration and lettered in track, boxing and baseball, graduating in 1950. He then served in the U.S. Air Force again in the Korean War. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Shirley Thomas Jewell; his three children, Dr. Baylor L. Jewell and his wife, Linda, of Tupelo, Miss., Julie Jewell Roy and her husband, L. Lane Roy, of Lafayette, and Wylie B. Jewell Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Maringouin; nine grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and sister, Helen Jewell Landry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lubin Jewell; siblings, Edwin B. Jewell, J. Lubin Jewell and Bonita Hubbard; and grandson, Camden G. Roy. His professional accomplishments included 40 years with Mutual of New York Insurance Co. and a lifelong involvement with the Bank of Maringouin, including serving as president and chief executive officer for 27 years. His civic involvements included serving as president of the LSU "L" Club and recently being honored as a "Golden Tiger" in recognition of the 50th anniversary of his graduation from LSU. He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Atchafalaya Basin and Grand Isle. Pallbearers will be Dustin Jewell, his granddaughter's husband, Duane Gremillion Jr., his son-in-law, L. Lane Roy, and his nephews, Harvey Best, Matt Jewell and Duane Jewell. Honorary pallbearers are best friends, Royce Guinn, Ray Selig and Charlie Lamb, and his nephews and board of directors of the Bank of Maringouin. Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, at The Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Rosedale with funeral services at the church to begin at 2 p.m. Entombment to follow in Grace Memorial Park Mausoleum in Plaquemine. Arrangements by Wilbert Funeral Home of Plaquemine.
