Imogene Battle Cowley was born September 28, 1939, to Arthur Battle and Katie Patterson Battle in Carthage, MS. She was the fifth of eight children. She transitioned from earthly labor to heavenly reward on Monday, May 18, 2020.
Education was a priority in the Battle family. Gene, as she was affectionately called, attended Zion Hill Elementary and Wesley Chapel High School. She matriculated at Tougaloo College, Mississippi Valley State where she earned her B.S. in Elementary Education; then Arkansas State University, where she earned her Masters in Reading Specialist K-12.
She united in marriage with Reverend Donald Louis Cowley November 18, 1970, and they became the "perfect pair". They were the proud parents of one daughter, Sherri Annette Cowley Scott. Later, Angela Houston became their goddaughter.
Her entire employment career was with Memphis City Schools. She taught at Cummings Elementary and Gordon Elementary, as a Reading Specialist. She retired in 1994, after thirty-two years of teaching service.
Gene followed her father's example in maintaining affiliation with the church. She was baptized as a child at Zion Hill African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Carthage, MS. She attended Prospect United Methodist with her sister briefly, in Memphis. As a minister's spouse, she traveled with her husband to several pastoral appointments which ultimately brought her to White's Chapel A. M. E. in Memphis, TN. She was diligent with the on-line services provided for worship and Bible study, including participating with Martin Chapel A. M. E. Church in Clarksville, TN; where her daughter pastors. She remained faithful and active at White's Chapel as a member of the Steward Board, the West TN Conference Lay Organization, the West TN Conference Women's Missionary Society (Torch Bearer), and Connectional Minister's Spouses, Widows & Widowers Organization Plus PK's.
She has been unofficially crowned as "Facebook Queen" because she NEVER met a status she didn't like. She looked forward to summer bus tours and traveling to destinations throughout the United States. While helping to care for her father, she developed an interest in the art of quilting and leaves many beautiful handmade items. She also enjoyed food, fun, and fellowship with her Sisters of Love club.
Imogene was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings David, Delmas, Larry, Harry, and Jacques, as well as grandson, Mycah Sean.
