Roger Smith
Mr. Roger Dean Smith, age 61, of 406 Center Court, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at his residence. He was the husband of Susan Knighton Smith.
Mr. Smith was born March 30, 1949 in Iron Gate, the son of the late Marcus Gilmer Smith, Sr. and Ona Ferguson Smith.
He was a graduate of Covington High School and served in the Virginia National Guard for 10 years. Mr. Smith was employed in the Loading Department of MeadWestvaco for 33 years. He enjoyed watching NASCAR especially his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and loved to collect Hot Wheels matchbox cars.
In addition to his wife, Susan Knighton Smith, Mr. Smith is survived by four brothers, Gil Smith and wife, Ruth of Covington; Bob Smith and wife, Helen of Covington;Steve Smith and wife, Lynn of Covington, and Chris Smith and wife, Custer of Millboro; one sister, Jean Porterfield and husband, Ron of Crows; a father-in-law, Jack Knighton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Marcus Gilmer Smith, Sr. and Ona Ferguson Smith, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Gail Mahaffey; two brothers, James L. Smith and Bruce W. Smith; and his mother-in-law, Ruth Knighton.
A private memorial service will be held with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
