Walter was raised at Upper Lake Chateaugay near Lyon Mountain, NY. His name at birth was Waldon but he used the name Walter most of his life. His mother died when he was 12 and a year later their home burned leaving his father and brother homeless. Walter lived and worked at the Lake View Hotel on Chazy Lake where he was a servant until he enlisted in the military.
Walter served in the 1st WW. One of his nieces recalled that both he and hs brother William were victims of mustard gas that contributed to early deaths.
