William raised a family at Upper Chateauguay Lake in Merrill NY. He had a small farm , ran a saloon (White Birches) on the Owly Out and worked as a hunting guide in the 1890s. His mother lived on the farm next to his with his sister and her husband. The 1973 History of Merrill states that the White Birches had belonged to the William Smith, great grandfather of Buzz Harrica, Lyon Mt. School Superintendant. That would have been William's father William Smith, Sr..
When Maude died in 1910, William rented out his house and saloon to J.B.Jenkins who had a speed boat and wanted access to the Lake. Will and his 2 youngest sons leased the house/tavern of Oliver Young and in Febuary 1911 a night time fire destroyed everything they had. Jenkins purchased Will's place a few years later.
Will, after the loss of his home, was a woodsman and caretaker at the Begland summer home. His youngest 2 sons were called to serve in WWI and he went to live with his daughter Emma Germaine's family at Ware,MA where he cut wood. He returned to Merrill where his mother and sister lived. He died there soon after the death of his mother.
Will's children were Johanna (Jennie) Alexander, Emma Trudell Germaine, Joseph, Frank, Gertrude Badger, Saddie Dupuis, Edward, Lillian Badger, William, and Walter. 4 others died as children or at birth before 1900. Jennie, Emma, Joseph, William and Walter (nee Waldon) lived the last part of their lives in Southbridge, MA.
