Emma grew up on a farm at Lake Chateaugay, NY. She worked in the hotel industry at Lyon Mountain where she met her 1st husband Henry Trudell. Emma and Henry had four children when he died at age 35 after being burned in a foundry accident.
Emma left the children with their aunt and grandmother at the Lake View House on Chazy Lake and she travelled to Saranac Lake where she was a pastry cook in the Berkshire House Hotel.She married Ernest Germaine, stable manager for the Lake View House. They took a small house on the grounds to raise a family. The hotel burned about 1917 and the family moved to Ware, MA.and then to Barre, Ma. where Emma was a cook at a boarding house for teachers. After that they moved to Southbridge, MA. where Emma's sister and 3 brothers had been living since as early as 1912. Emma's uncle John Lazure had moved to the Southbridge area in 1898.
