Obituary
Marvin Charles Bitner, age 93 of Ottumwa, formerly of Centerville, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at the Vista Woods Care Center.

Marvin was born on March 10, 1927, the son of Vernie and Lena Louise (Sauer) Bitner in Haysville, Iowa. He graduated from Cincinnati High School, with the Class of 1945. Marvin was united in marriage to Doris Yvonne Surber, and to this union three children were born, Nancy, Mary and Kathy. They later divorced. He was then united in marriage to Evelyn Jean Forsythe on July 21, 1962, at the Church of God in Centerville. She passed away on May 11, 2011.

Marvin worked as a mechanic for Jack Morris Motors in Centerville for many years. He then owned and operated his own auto business, Bitner’s Garage in Centerville, located off of the Northeast corner of the square. At the same time, he also owned and operated a laundromat in Centerville, until his retirement. During retirement, Marvin enjoyed working part time at the Centerville Wal-Mart putting bicycles together.

Marvin enjoyed playing board games, such as Yahtzee, Cribbage and Dominoes. He was a long-time member of the Solid Rock Church of God in Centerville. Moreover, Marvin cherished spending time with his family.

Left to honor Marvin’s memory are his children, Nancy (Duane) Akers of Albia, Mary (Steven Sr.) Terrell of Eldon, and Kathy Dommer of Eldon; two brothers, Donald (Claralea) Bitner of Centerville and Jerry (Judy) Bitner of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Roger) Davis, Steven Terrell Jr., Adam Akers, Melissa Crawford, Michael (Heather) Dommer; five great grandchildren, Zachary Davis, Quinton Crawford, Collin Crawford, Carson Dommer, and Grace Dommer; as well as several other family members including, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Bitner; his parents, Vernie and Lena Bitner; a brother, Harry Bitner; and a sister, Irma Owens.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM, Friday, March 13, 2020 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Tony Angran officiating. Burial will follow the service at Sunset View Cemetery near Moulton. Visitation will take place Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 5:00-7:00PM.
