John Dingwall was born the eighth of fourteen siblings at Inchrory, Fodderty Parish, Ross-shire, Scotland (now Highland). His father was an agricultural laborer and farm servant. He also began his career as an agricultural laborer.
He immigrated to the US sometime after 1891. He remains illusive in the US census. He met his death in Manhattan, New York, from a fractured skull and ribs suffered while alighting from a car and struck by another. He died at Bellvue Hospital in Manhattan. His death certificate notes he was single, a laborer and the notation of 317 E. 46th Street that may be the location of the accident. His death certificate notes burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
