Walter Phillip Hammond was born on September 15, 1881 in Kentucky, the son of Hiram Hammond and Susan "Susie" (Cantrell) Hammond (1850–1913).

He was married 1st to Nannie Smith (ca 1882- ) on December 18, 1901 in Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky, the daughter of Tommie Smith and Prudie ( -- ) Smith. Walter was married 2nd in Sumner County, Tennessee on December 21, 1917 to Ara Earl Hyde (1898–1960), and she was the daughter of Jesse M Hyde (1863–1901) and Millie June (Stamps) Hyde (1864–1917).

Doing right-of-way clearance for the telephone company and living at 2239 Winford Avenue in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, he was 74 years old when he died November 6, 1955 at home. Burial was the next day in Spring Hill Cemetery, Madison {city, not county}.
