John was the son of William Stone and Luella Penney, husband of Catherine Liley and father of Gerald Stone. John grew up in New Castle and graduated form New Castle High School in 1929. He the attended and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1932. He was a production manager at the Johnson Bronze Company in New Castle.
