Joseph completed the commercial program at New Castle High School in 1913 and went to work for the P. & L.E. Railroad. He began as a clerk/assistant cashier in the freight office and retired in 37 years as the Yardmaster of the Aliquippa Yard. He was a member of the Presbyterian church in Beaver and belonged to the Lodge of the Craft No. 433 F. & A.M., the New Castle Valley Consistory , A.A.S.R. and Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh. .
