William Stone was the son of Joseph A. and Josephine Reynolds Stone. William graduated from the Pennsylvania Military College and went to work for the P. & L.E. Railroad in 1888 , as a freight agent and retiring in 1935. On June 19, 1890 William married Luella Penney in Allegheny County PA. He was the father of sons James, John and Joseph Stone, and daughters Jessie Gunter and Helen Ramsey.

William was active in the community and belonged to the First Presbyterian Church in New Castle, was a member of Youghiogheny Lodge 583, the Grand Holy Royal Arch Chapter, the Syria Temple in Pittsburgh where he was a Knight Templar, the Pittsburgh Scottish Rite Consistory and the P. & L. E. RR Association.

William was survived by sons James and John Stone.
